மெய்யெழுத்துக்கள் ஒலிக்கும் தன்மையின் அடிப்படையில் மூன்று வகைகளாகப் பிரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன: வல்லினம், மெல்லினம் மற்றும் இடையினம் இவை முறையே மார்பு, மூக்கு மற்றும் கழுத்தைப் பிறப்பிடமாகக் கொண்டு ஒலிக்கின்றன.
